Liberty Craft House

Liberty Craft House

We went to Liberty Craft House on one of those June nights that made us want to sit outside and enjoy the season.  I’ve wanted to try it for a while but, that’s not going to happen during the semester. If you are local or above the age of 22, best to go during the Summer.  It is part of the Dante’s Restaurant group who’s other restaurants are conveniently all located in the same block; Hi Way Pizza (its back !) The Deli, The Saloon…..  My mother recalls getting Hi Way Pizza at the original location just around the corner on Heister Street in the 60’s – 10¢ a slice two for 15¢.

All the restaurants in one location make me think that they all share a kitchen, and certainly resources.  Its a good business model but often in those cases all of the places end up tasting the same.  I am happy to report that Liberty Craft House felt unique and we were pleasantly surprised.  The menu had so many great choices; meat and cheese plates, snacks, salads, flatbreads, sandwiches and casseroles.  They tout using local, natural and sustainable products – and we certainly noticed the quality of ingredients in our meals.

They also have beer.  Lots of beer.  They have 46 drinks on tap which change out with the season.

lets eat!

Instead of each of us ordering a meal, we decided to split three items; Crab Balls, Dried Cranberry & Goat Cheese salad and a Prosciutto & Fig flatbread.  First the presentation – it was really nice! We ate outside (because nice weather and all).  When I popped my head inside, it seemed a little cavernous and just one big space.  I could see that when its filled with a 100 students it would feel more intimate.  The outside seating however was great, although like most State College outdoor seating options, not enough of it.  Enough room for a few tables to seat about 16 people.   Shout out to whomever selected the dishes!  The plates, along with the food presentation made this place feel way more upscale and modern.

Overall we were really pleased with our food.  It was presented well, and tasted great.  The Crab Balls were from the snack part of the menu.  You get three in an order and they are essentially mini crab cakes with a remoulade sauce. The salad was fresh and had just enough of everything.  Ordered on its own it would be enough for a lunch or light dinner.  The flatbread was good, and again enough for one person to have as their dinner.  When we go back, I am eyeing up the Reuben, Bacon Crab Melt, and Piggy Mac & Cheese.

Overall, we were really pleased with our visit here.  It definitely delivered above and beyond what I expected and I highly recommend checking it out!
