I have not walked into CC Peppers in 20+ years, but even if you haven’t been there in a while, don’t worry ITS EXACTLY THE SAME. You know that classic aesthetic of green and purple stripes tracing every nook and cranny of its strip mall footprint. The ceiling tiles, once white are now yellow, ceiling diffuser grilles are now coated with years worth of grime and rust. The kitchen, in full view of CC’s patrons, still boasts the classic stainless steel griddle, the long prep bench full of sub toppings, and the best piece of equipment, the fryer. The jar with water at the bottom – begging you to have your try and drop a coin in to see if you can get it into the shot glass nestled at the bottom, is still there. Its classic State College food nostalgia and much like its look, the menu hasn’t changed either. And really that’s a good thing.
CC Peppers offers a classic sub shop menu, subs; hot and cold, wraps (I think those might be new additions in the last decade), salads, cheesesteaks and fries. It offers everything you would want for a quick, satisfying meal. This is classic, rainy Sunday comfort food, and it didn’t disappoint. My go to order, always has been and always will be the pizza sub. Don’t ask me how or why this came to be my go to, but it did. I used to order it every time at the CC’s located in the Westerly Parkway Shopping Centre where it used to be a High School hang out. Taking a bite out my first pizza sub in twenty years was better than I imagined. My husband ordered California Style cheesesteak, which didn’t disappoint either.
But…..hands down the BEST item on CC Peppers menu is the cheese fries. I’m talking classic, yellow, processed melty cheese smothering straight from the fryer, crispy fries. I’m not sure how they do it, but those fries are structural. You can hold out an 8″ long fry with cheese and that sucker is not bending. Those fries are crisp and can happily swim in that bath of that melty cheese sauce.
